Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

Behaviour changes when its contingencies change: analysing function and reorganising reinforcement is how real life is transformed.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a methodological framework derived from the experimental analysis of behaviour whose aim is to produce socially significant behavioural change through procedures based on the principles of operant conditioning. Formally defined by Baer, Wolf and Risley (1968), ABA establishes seven dimensions of quality —applied, behavioural, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective and generalisable— that serve as criteria for evaluating the validity and usefulness of an intervention. The focus is not on explaining behaviour through inferred constructs but on identifying observable functional relations between antecedents, behaviour and consequences, and on designing interventions that are replicable and empirically evaluable. ABA has had a particularly significant impact in neurodevelopmental disorders, special education, habit modification, safety, public health and institutional settings, and constitutes the most rigorous methodological standard within applied behaviourism.

Core ideas

  1. Behaviour is the legitimate and sufficient object of clinical intervention

    ABA holds that psychological change can be achieved by intervening directly on observable behaviour without recourse to unmeasurable inferred constructs. Behaviour is understood as a functional interaction with the environment, and its systematic modification makes it possible to produce relevant and verifiable clinical improvements. This position does not deny inner experience but places it outside the model's explanatory and operative core. (Skinner, 1953; Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968).

  2. Functional analysis is the heart of therapeutic change

    ABA maintains that there are no universal techniques, only interventions functional to specific contingencies. The precise identification of the antecedents and consequences that maintain a behaviour makes it possible to design treatments tailored to the case, increasing effectiveness and reducing arbitrary or moralising interventions. Without functional analysis, the intervention loses its analytic character. (Iwata et al., 1994; Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007).

  3. Evidence of change must be demonstrated in the case itself

    The model gives priority to demonstrating experimental control at the individual level through single-case designs. Therapeutic progress is not inferred from clinical impression but from systematic changes in the level, trend and variability of the behaviour after the intervention is introduced, guaranteeing causal attribution within the patient. (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968; Kazdin, 2011).

  4. The environment is an active part of the treatment

    ABA conceives the context —family, school, institution— as a central component both of the problem and of the solution. Environmental contingencies shape and maintain behaviour, so lasting change requires modifying the environment's practices and training those who interact with the person day to day. (Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007).

  5. Reinforcement is the main engine of adaptive learning

    The model holds that behaviours are acquired, maintained or weakened according to their consequences. The systematic use of reinforcement —and its appropriate scheduling— makes it possible to build functional repertoires, replace problem behaviours and promote maintenance and generalisation without relying primarily on aversive procedures. (Skinner, 1953; Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007).

  6. The intervention must be technological and replicable

    A valid ABA intervention must be described with such precision that another professional can implement it unambiguously. This technological requirement guards against idiosyncratic drift on the therapist's part and turns the intervention into a procedure that can be evaluated, corrected and transferred. (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968).

  7. Clinical effectiveness is not enough without social validity

    ABA stresses that change must be meaningful for the person and their environment, not merely statistically detectable. Goals, procedures and outcomes must be relevant, acceptable and functional in everyday life, avoiding interventions that are effective but irrelevant or excessively intrusive. (Wolf, 1978).

  8. Generalisation and maintenance are programmed, not hoped for

    The model assumes that learning is initially contextual and fragile. Transfer to new contexts and long-term maintenance must therefore be planned explicitly through variation of stimuli, thinning of reinforcers and training in natural environments. (Stokes & Baer, 1977; Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007).
