Genetic Constructivism

To know is to build structures that reorganise themselves in order to recover equilibrium.

Jean Piaget's genetic constructivism is an explanatory framework for the development of knowledge that understands the mind as an active system which builds structures (schemes and operations) through continuous interaction with the environment. Psychological change is produced by processes of assimilation and accommodation: the person integrates experience into existing schemes and, when experience overwhelms them, reorganises those schemes to restore a more stable and complex equilibrium. Piaget describes this construction as a progressive genesis of forms of cognitive organisation — from sensorimotor intelligence through to operational thought — in which the subject does not copy reality but constitutes it through coordinations of action and of meaning. In psychotherapy this framework underpins constructivist readings of the self and of change: distress can be understood as rigidity in schemes and operations, as persistent disequilibrium, or as styles of meaning that fail to accommodate new demands, and intervention as the facilitation of reorganisations that increase complexity, flexibility and the capacity for self-regulation.

Theory of change

A person changes when they reorganise their structures of meaning in order to integrate discrepancies and recover a more complex and flexible equilibrium.

Core ideas

  1. Knowledge is actively constructed

    The subject neither copies reality nor receives it passively; they construct it through coordinations of action that are progressively organised into ever more complex structures. Knowledge is the outcome of the organism's structuring activity in interaction with its environment, where perception, action and logical organisation form a functional unity. The reality that is known is always the product of these constructive operations, not a direct reflection of the external world. (Piaget, 1936; 1970).

  2. Assimilation and accommodation regulate change

    All experience is initially integrated through assimilation to existing schemes, that is, interpreted from structures already available. When reality overwhelms those schemes, however, accommodation occurs: a structural modification that transforms cognitive organisation in order to incorporate the novelty. Development is not a simple accumulation of content but a dynamic equilibrium between structural conservation and adaptive reorganisation. (Piaget, 1936; 1952).

  3. Equilibration is the engine of development

    The cognitive system tends towards states of equilibrium that are increasingly stable and complex. The disequilibrium generated by internal contradictions, or by discrepancies with experience, drives structural reorganisations that lead to higher forms of coherence, reversibility and logical coordination. Equilibration is a self-regulating process that accounts for the direction and the progression of cognitive development. (Piaget, 1970).

  4. Cognitive structures evolve through stages

    Intellectual development follows a sequence of qualitatively distinct stages — sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operations and formal operations — each characterised by specific forms of structural organisation. Every stage represents a coherent system of operations that cannot be reduced to the sum of the previous one, but involves a global reorganisation of the way the world is thought about and understood. (Piaget & Inhelder, 1966).

  5. Logic emerges from action

    Logical operations are neither innate nor merely linguistic; they emerge from the internalisation and progressive coordination of actions upon the world. Reversibility, conservation and seriation are built out of practical schemes that are transformed into formal operational structures. Abstract thought is a reorganisation of internalised action. (Piaget, 1952; 1970).

  6. Identity is sustained by structural conservation

    The cognitive self rests on the continuity of organising schemes that make it possible to conserve identity across change. Developmental transformation does not entail a rupture of the system, but a reorganisation that maintains structural coherence within new and more complex configurations. The stability of the self depends on the conservation of coordinating structures that integrate past and present experience. (Piaget, 1970).

  7. Decentring widens perspective

    Development involves moving beyond initial cognitive egocentrism and acquiring the capacity for decentring, that is, for coordinating multiple perspectives simultaneously. This process makes it possible to understand other people's points of view, to integrate multiple dimensions of a problem, and to regulate one's own thinking through reversible, coordinated operations. Decentring is a condition for complex logical and social thought. (Piaget & Inhelder, 1966).

  8. Error is a condition of progress

    Incorrect answers are not simple failures but coherent expressions of a cognitive structure at a given level of development. Error reveals the current organisation of the system and offers a privileged opportunity to generate productive disequilibrium. Without error there is no cognitive conflict, and without conflict there is no structural reorganisation. (Piaget, 1936; 1952).

  9. Cognitive adaptation is structural, not cumulative

    Development does not consist of adding information to a stable base, but of transforming the organising structures that make understanding and action possible. Each stage involves a qualitative reorganisation that redefines the possibilities of meaning, inference and regulation. Progress is structural and systemic, not merely quantitative. (Piaget, 1970).
