Token economy
A clear token system turns behaviour into visible progress and sustains change until the real environment takes over.
The token economy is an applied behavioural system based on the principles of operant conditioning and schedules of reinforcement, in which generalised reinforcers (tokens, points or other symbols) are used that can be exchanged for goods, privileges or activities. Developed initially in institutional settings, it makes it possible to reinforce multiple behaviours systematically, to establish clear criteria for earning and losing tokens, and to maintain control over the frequency and cost of reinforcement, thereby facilitating behavioural change in complex environments.
