Cognitive psychology

The mind organises experience by transforming information through schemas, memory and attentional processes that mediate between stimulus and response.

A founding work of the cognitive turn that redefines psychology as the science of information processing. Neisser proposes studying how organisms select, encode, store, transform and retrieve information, shifting the explanatory focus from behaviourism's stimulus–response associations towards the internal structures and processes that mediate experience and behaviour. The book consolidates a representational and computational framework of the mind, legitimising the experimental study of processes such as perception, attention, memory and complex thought through objective scientific methods. This formulation will provide the conceptual substrate for the later development of many cognitive and cognitive-behavioural clinical models, although it does not in itself constitute a therapeutic theory or a clinical model of intervention. Historically, the model represents a decisive break with classical behaviourism and a central point of departure for the contemporary cognitive sciences, even though later generations would question some limitations of classical cognitivism, especially its initial tendency to conceptualise the mind as abstract information processing relatively separate from the body, emotion and relational context.

A person changes when they reorganise the way they perceive, interpret and process information, modifying the schemas and representations that mediate between experience and behaviour.

  1. The mind is an information-processing system

    Neisser redefines psychology as the scientific study of how information is selected, transformed, stored and retrieved by the organism. The mind is not reducible to observable behaviour; it actively mediates between stimulus and response through organised internal processes. This formulation consolidates the so-called cognitive turn against classical behaviourism. (Neisser, 1967).

  2. Internal representation is the explanatory core of behaviour

    Behaviour is explained not solely by external contingencies, but by the internal representations the subject builds of the environment. These representations organise perception, anticipation and action, becoming the relevant causal level for psychological explanation. (Neisser, 1967).

  3. Perception is an active, constructive process

    Neisser rejects the idea of perception as the passive recording of stimuli. The organism selects and organises information according to prior schemas, expectations and goals. Perception is guided by internal structures that influence what is attended to and how it is interpreted. (Neisser, 1967).

  4. Schemas organise experience

    The concept of the schema describes cognitive structures that guide the exploration of the environment and the interpretation of information. Schemas direct attention, anticipate outcomes and allow experience to be continuous. They constitute a formal basis for later developments in cognitive therapy. (Neisser, 1967).

  5. Memory is reconstruction, not simple storage

    Memory does not function as a static file of data, but as a reconstructive process in which retrieval depends on prior structures and the present context. This perspective anticipates later developments on memory biases and cognitive distortions. (Neisser, 1967).

  6. The experimental study of internal processes is scientifically legitimate

    Neisser legitimises the empirical study of mental processes through rigorous experimental methods (reaction times, memory tasks, attention paradigms), breaking with the behaviourist restriction to studying only observable behaviour. (Neisser, 1967).

  7. The mind can be described through computational metaphors

    Cautiously, the cognitive framework adopts metaphors of computational processing to describe the mind as a system that encodes, transforms and retrieves information. This analogy will decisively influence later clinical cognitivism. (Neisser, 1967).

  8. The subject is an active processor, not a passive receiver

    The human being is conceived as an agent who actively explores the environment, selects relevant information and constructs meaning. This view replaces behaviourism's mechanistic image with a dynamic, structural conception of mental functioning. (Neisser, 1967).

  9. Cognitive errors are processing failures

    Within this framework, distortions or biases can be understood as errors in the attention to, encoding of or retrieval of information. They are not yet conceptualised as 'irrational beliefs', but as mismatches in the processing system, opening the way to later cognitive therapy. (Neisser, 1967).

  10. The cognitive turn redefines the object of psychology

    The 1967 work consolidates the shift from the exclusive study of behaviour towards the structural analysis of internal mental processes. This change of focus establishes the conceptual substrate on which cognitive clinical models will be developed in subsequent decades, although the book proposes no therapeutic intervention.
